In the 1970s, Shiino Hidesato of H.S. Anderson, designed what would become the iconic Mad Cat guitar. Mad Cats are unique instruments, with their body construction based around a Walnut center strip, Ash sides and a Maple top & back. While looking like a Tele, these guitars have their own thing going on, with less of a bright edge from the bridge and a neck feeling more Strat-like. Their vibrant, sparkling sound is great for funk as well as old-school gain so you can imagine why Prince loved this guitar so much.
A lot has happened since H.S. Anderson released the Vintage Re-Issue Mad Cat in 2012. With feedback from owners of original Mad Cats, dealers, and customers, they've updated their inspired take on this iconic instrument.
An original 1984 Mad Cat was acquired by the team and became the basis for the new V2 model. This specific Mad Cat has a very comfortable neck profile, with a smooth rounded fingerboard. Since the necks are made by hand, the new profile was a fairly easy pivot for their craftsmen.
The pickups on the '84, although noisy, sound fantastic. Especially the bridge position, which is positioned in the original angle, almost parallel to the bridge. Heartbreaker pickups was tasked with cloning the sound of these particular original pickups, but without the noise - and they came through. Every Vintage re-issue Mad Cat (version 2) ships with an individual measurement sheet for each pickups, as compared to the reference curve of the original '84's.
A new feature of the V2 Mad Cat is the addition of a 4-way selector switch, wired to provide the following pickup combinations :
Position 1 : both pickups in series
Position 2 : neck pickup
Position 3 : both pickups in parallel
Position 4 : bridge pickup
The leopard pickguard material used in the reissue is more durable than what was used on the originals. Therefore, Anderson did away with the recessed output jack and went back to the original 70's-style leopard plate. The headstock shape, along with all other specifications are the same as the '70's Mad Cats.
The V2 Reissue was created with the highest respect to honor the sound and feel of the originals and is hand-built in the original Moridaira factory by top Japanese craftsmen. Each guitar includes a certificate of authenticity.
